Arugula is also known as rocket in English, roquette in French and rucola in Italian, likely because of the peppery explosion of flavours you get in your mouth when you bite into a fresh leaf.
Part of the cabbage family (kale, broccoli, radishes), it has a similar nutritional profile with the following benefits:
- High amounts of anticancer properties, more than any other vegetable family.
- Properties that activate detoxifying enzymes in the body.
- Immune boosting antioxidants, vitamins and minerals like calcium, potassium, folate and Vitamin K (a vitamin involved in blood clotting & bone metabolism).
The pepperiness (or rocket-ness!) of the arugula can be balanced by mixing it with other mild leafy lettuce greens, your favourite vegetables, and a delicious vinaigrette.
One of my favourite ways to enjoy arugula, and to really taste the peppery and distinct flavours, is to have it with a simple citrus vinaigrette, shavings of pecorino, and some chopped hazelnuts.
